Tell us bit about yourself (family, job, sports, military interest etc..)… I grew up in Georgia and moved to NYC where I became a Flight Attendant for Pan Am. After Pan Am, I finished school and have been a kindergarten teacher ever since. I am married and have two kiddos—17 and 9. I also have a rotten Boston Terrier, who runs the show in my house.
What were you doing before CrossFit.. I belonged to a big gym and would go in and do spin classes, Zumba, and yoga. I never talked to anyone (hard to believe) and no one talked to me. I did not pick up a weight, a bar, a kettlebell….I had no clue! Then in October 2014, my family moved to Castle Rock. I didn’t know anyone and wanted to join a gym close to home.
What were your thoughts after your first CrossFit workout… It’s funny to look back and remember that first workout. It was Fight Gone Bad, and I had no clue exactly what I was getting into. It was intense! It was crazy trying to count, figuring out the moves, modifying, all of that on top of the mantra in my head….”Do not throw up, do not throw up, do not throw up…”
What were your goals when joining CrossFit… I joined Crossfit of course for the physical benefits— strength, endurance, and flexibility – but I was really hoping to meet people. I was new to Castle Rock and needed (I’m kinda social) a group of friends. I also teach kindergarten and desperately needed something besides alcohol to unwind after a day spent with 5 year olds.
Have you achieved any of those goals… I like to think that I am a work in progress….slow progress, but progress nonetheless. I have taken Taylor’s lifting classes a couple times and feel a bit more confident in some of the lifts and the language of Crossfit. So, have I met some goals? I feel healthier, stronger, confident, and I think I am beginning to see a muscle here and there. I can do things I never thought I could do…..that’s a good feeling! But the best part of Crossfit for me has been the friendships I’ve made. An amazing community of people call this place home, and I am lucky to be friends with a few of them.
Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym…. Life outside the box is good. When you take care of yourself, it not only shows on the outside, but on the inside as well. I am happy, sore, and willing (usually) to try new things. I have a great new circle of friends that keep me out way too late, but it’s a great life!
Any advice for people getting started… I started a week before I turned 50….. it is never too late!! I didn’t know all the terminology, so I think Taylor encouraged me to hop on Youtube and watch….. I am pretty sure I could be considered a stalker to several Crossfit athletes, but I know what a squat snatch is now. When you are new, enjoy each little accomplishment, no matter how small.
Some of your recent accomplishments… I really don’t have a lot in that column yet….. I did complete the WOD last night after somehow getting my big toe caught in the bike during the warm up…. that’s an accomplishment, right? I love every minute of it and I couldn’t have done any of it without some great coaching and even greater patience on the part of Taylor, Kirk, DP, David, Brenda, Spencer and Jocelyn. Thanks!
