The Gym Fitness Center & CrossFit Castle Rock celebrate Olympic Day with Weightlifting & Powerlifting Competitions

Event one of 2,000+ nationwide events celebrating the birth of the modern Olympic Games

Castle Rock, CO – The spirit of the Olympic Movement will roll into Castle Rock in June, as The Gym Fitness Center, home of CrossFit Castle Rock, hosts both a weightlifting and a powerlifting competition in celebration of Olympic Day.

A sanctioned USA Weightlifting competition will be held on Saturday, June 17, with a powerlifting competition to follow on Sunday, June 18. Though the powerlifting competition is not officially sanctioned, USA Powerlifting technical rules will be followed. Athletes may compete in the weightlifting competition, the powerlifting competition, or both events to compete for combined SuperTotal awards.

“Weightlifting and powerlifting used to go hand in hand in the early days of strength sports in the United States,” says Competition Director Rachel Crass Wood. “We are excited to be able to bring them together again in Colorado. Not many people know that powerlifting is recognized by the International Olympic Committee in the World Games, because it’s not in the Olympics. But it is making a push to be included in the Olympic Games, and we are committed to supporting that mission in any way that we can.”

These competitions are two of more than 2,000 events taking place nationwide during the month of June. The events, designed to engage youth and promote the ideals of the Olympic movement, feature athlete appearances, family-friendly activities and interactive learning experiences.

Around the world, more than 160 countries take part in the annual celebration. Olympic Day, created in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games, focuses on the Olympic values and ideals such as fair play, perseverance, respect, and sportsmanship. In the U.S., Olympic Day events range from small gatherings to large, city-wide events.
