Tell us bit about yourself (family, job, sports, military interest etc..)… I was a military brat growing up and moved around quite a bit. I ended up in KS for high school and college and KS is where I call home. I work as an engineer which eventually allowed my wife and I to move to CO in 2008 and we love everything it has to offer. We have two great kids, 6 and 4. I enjoy mountain biking on the weekends, and skiing with the family in the winters.
What were you doing before CrossFit.. I’ve always been active in sports growing up, soccer, skiing, and running were always a part of my life. You could probably name any intramural college sport and I likely played it. The few years prior to crossfit, I was mainly running, mountain biking, and participating in a few triathlons, but nothing consistent. Eventually life got in the way of even stay in shape for these, so my plan was to take some sort class/training to get back into shape. I eventually decided to check out CFCR mainly because the convenience to my office, but really had no clue what crossfit was about.
What were your thoughts after your first CrossFit workout… Exactly what I was looking for. I think it was “Jack”, and Coach B started me at using only the bar for the push presses and I was still horribly sore.
What were your goals when joining CrossFit… To get in shape
Have you achieved any of those goals… Yes! And I’ve exceeded any previous notion of what I thought “in shape“ was.
Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym…. Sure. Being healthier just feels better. Sleep is more consistent. And those first few mountain bike rides or ski days don’t hurt nearly as bad.
Any advice for people getting started… Come every day that you can even if sore. It eventually goes away.
Some of your recent accomplishments… When I first started, I had no clue what a clean and jerk was. My very first clean+jerk was 30lb less than my body weight. I made it a goal of mine to be able to c+j my body weight, which I eventually achieved. Recently I was stoked to able to c+j my bw+30lbs.
What makes CFCR special to you? I’m able to come late mornings which allows me to break up the work day with great people and coaches.
