When did you start CrossFitting… August 2015
Favorite wod… I really like most of them, but I get the best times when there is rowing involved.
Least favorite wod… Anything with overhead squats or burpees.

Tell us bit about yourself (family, job, sports, military interest etc..)…
I am from Colorado and played basketball and baseball growing up but was too skinny for football. As a freshman in HS I was 6’6” 160lbs. I grew a few more inches during high school and played college basketball in Memphis.
After college I somehow convinced Heather to marry me, and we had our 10th anniversary last year. I also got into coaching, and was the varsity basketball coach at Arapahoe and Columbine. After Emma was born, I quit coaching and focused on my career.
Our lives changed drastically two years ago when we discovered we were expecting spontaneous triplets. We now have 5 kids: Emma(6), Tucker(4), and Caroline, Max, and Knox(21 months). We are constantly battling to enjoy the amazing little anarchists we have been blessed with, and not become overwhelmed with how challenging our home life is. My wife is so incredible with all that she does for the kids. Every day I remind myself how fortunate I am.
Some of my interests include golf, basketball, whiskey, food, stepping on legos, and a good thoughtful conversation.
What were you doing before CrossFit..
I have tried a variety of exercise schemes since my playing career ended including P90, Half Marathons, and programs of my own design. I never could bring the intensity I wanted on a consistent basis. So my fitness was all over the place. I had also tried almost all of the diets out there causing large weight fluctuations. But I always ended up weighing more than when I started.
Then in June of 2014, Heather was put on hospital bedrest due to triplet complications. The next 14 months were a blur of prayer and survival with no time for working out. We have been so blessed with our ‘midget mafia’ but I ended up on anti-anxiety meds and gained a bunch of weight. So when I started at CFCR, I was bigger than I had ever been and in the worst shape of my life.
What were your thoughts after your first CrossFit workout…
I wasn’t sure I was going to survive, but I kind of knew I needed it to survive. It was the challenge that I was looking for. My biggest memory was the encouragement I got from Sully in particular that day. I knew I might have found something special. What were your goals when joining CrossFit…
Get in shape and lose weight.
Have you achieved any of those goals…
Yes. The combination of Crossfit and a nutrition program I use has helped me lose 25 pounds and keep it off. I still want to lose a lot more weight and now I have the confidence that I can do it.
When I started I couldn’t do squat, literally. Or hang on the bar. Now I can do RX pullups(only a few) and do full depth squats. The pain in my knee and shoulders has disappeared. I feel like an athlete again.
Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym….
I can do things that I wasn’t able to before and not be afraid of getting hurt. I can change 3 diapers in row without sweating through my shirt. It has helped me be a better father to my offspring and a better husband to my wife.
Crossfit has also helped me mentally. The past year I have also had intermittent employment, and crossfit was the thing that helped me from going completely crazy.
Any advice for people getting started…
Check your ego but not your competitiveness. And don’t compromise your form for speed on the lifts (advice that I always need). And don’t take yourself too seriously, take time to laugh and connect with the people.
What makes CFCR special to you?
The coaches have been great to me, but most of all it is the other members that make it so special. I have spent significant time in three different class times and have met some great people whom I consider friends. The members are amazingly supportive and not judgmental. I think CFCR is very special and unique group of people.
