Caffeine: Pre-Workout Placebo?

Where you find CrossFit athletes, you’re likely to find caffeine.

Whether they choose a hurried cup of joe in the morning, brew a relaxed artisanal pour-over or take a caffeine-spiked pre-workout supplement, many CrossFit athletes rely on caffeine to get them going and give them an extra push in the gym.

Caffeine has a profound effect on the brain and body and improves performance in endurance events, but science hasn’t shown it helps athletes lift more weight or cycle a barbell faster. Your morning coffee might make you feel more motivated to go to the gym and more focused once you’re there, but it’s not clear the supplement has any influence on how much weight you move.
